Monday morning, the trial for the second person charged in the kidnapping and murder of Kamille “Cupcake” McKinney will begin in federal court in Tuscaloosa. Derek Brown is scheduled to appear at the Tuscaloosa Federal Building and Courthouse at 9 a.m. Monday. Brown faces federal kidnapping charges in the abduction of 3-year-old McKinney from the Tom Brown Village housing complex in Birmingham in October 2019. Authorities say Brown, along with Patrick Stallworth, took the child from the public housing complex on the night of October 12, 2019. The two are accused of holding McKinney at a Center Point apartment complex until she was killed. Investigators say Stallworth reported watching Brown suffocate the child in the apartment. Her body was found in a dumpster 10 days after she was kidnapped. As for Stallworth, a jury found him guilty on federal kidnapping charges in Birmingham last month. He faces life without the possibility of parole. He and Brown still have to stand trial on state charges. WVTM 13 investigative reporter Jon Paepcke and veteran photographer Jamey Bryan will cover Brown’s federal kidnapping trial in Tuscaloosa on Monday. Look for their coverage beginning at 4 p.m. on WVTM 13.
